Stamp duty holiday extension - a new cliff edge?

Beware the extension to the SDLT holiday in today’s Budget - the cliff edge remains

The March 2021 Budget announcement of the continuation of the stamp duty land tax holiday was a welcome, if much trailed measure.

However, the Chancellor’s promise to prevent a cliff edge at the end of the holiday looks unlikely to come true in the real world.

After 30 June 2021 until 30 September 2021, the SDLT saving from the holiday will reduce from £15,000 to just £2,500 (on a property costing £500,000 or more).

With our crystal ball, we think that most people will therefore still be pushing for completion of their property purchases before the end of June cut-off.
